Overview
I was contracted as the sole Product Designer to create an iOS app for Dyson Business Development Managers who wanted to easily bring Dyson technology to life when meeting with business clients.
This high profile project was the driving force behind Dyson’s goal to modernise their business to business sales, which were still dependent on lugging physical products and costly print materials to client meetings.
The key goals were to:
- Display Dyson’s latest range of products
- Bring Dyson technology alive with engaging content and get rid of costly brochures
- Get quick access to supporting documents and assets
- Create bespoke client presentations on the fly without the need for mobile signal (in car, on train, on plane etc.)

What I did
Discovery
- Stakeholder interviews with c-suite executives and management to clarify the brief, cover anything missing, and begin to build good relationships.
- Conducted user research and interviews with Business Development Managers and Business Clients to understand their pain points, and needs.
- Observed Business Development Managers in the field while they visited clients.
Design
Information architecture
- Conducted card sorting to better understand Dyson Business Development Managers mental models for labelling and organisation, and to design a content structure and navigation that’s easy to understand.
- Created a simple Tree Test to check the content structures, categories and labels to ensure content was easy to find.
- Created low fidelity wire-frames and prototypes to test early navigation, content and concepts before starting visual design.
Visual design and prototyping
- Visual design to strict brand guidelines and requirement for internationalisation.
- Created new icons for the app bottom navigation.
- Continuous, little and often usability testing with high fidelity prototypes to refine designs.
- Presented regularly in design reviews with Head of Brand, Head of Digital and Head of Product Design and Head of Business Development.
Development collaboration
- Provided detailed specification for development which included a style guide, interaction details, prototypes, design assets, and user flows.
- I was able to influence development strategy by encouraging Dyson to hire an in-house developer instead of outsourcing to an agency, which halved our development costs and timeline.
- Attended the interviews for developers and closely collaborated throughout the build.
Testimonials

I had the pleasure of working with Joe Mallory Skinner on our high profile B2B app project. Joe was hired as a User Experience Designer and was briefed to design an intuitive app that would transform the way our field sales teams operate and consequentially lead to increased cost savings for the business.
Joe’s user centred approach and attention to detail was immediately noticed and admired. Working closely with users, Joe produced excellent and detailed designs that delighted users and stakeholders; ultimately providing a faultless model for the development team to work from.
Joe’s commitment to the project has continued throughout the app’s development, ensuring it adhered to our strong brand guidelines, whilst supporting our technical team with problem solving.
His dedication and talent has won him respect throughout the business here at Dyson and I would have no hesitation in recommending him for future projects.
